Portage is a city in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 46,292 in the 2010 census. Portage is known for its Pharmaceutical manufacturing and celery agriculture. On February 19th 2021, the President of the United States Joe Biden visited Portage to commemorate the production of the Pfizer Vaccine. The city has a total area of 35.17 square miles (91.09 km²), of which 32.23 sq miles (83.48 km²) is land and 2.94sq miles (7.61 km²") is water.Austin Lake is in the southeast part of the city and was named for Moses Austin, who had emigrated to Portage Township from Genesee County, New York in 1833. A settlement grew on the north shore of the lake, known as Austin or Austin Lake. A post office named "Austin's Lake" was established on May 18, 1850, with Austin as postmaster, and operated until August 15, 1853. The place was also a station on the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad in 1867. In 2000, there were 44,897 people, 18,138 households, and 12,134 families living in the city. For every 100 females, there was a median income of $61,377, while for every 100 males there were 92,377. In 2010, the city was 90.75% White, 3.73% African American, 2.64% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 1.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.1%.

Geography

Austin Lake is in the southeast part of the city and was named for Moses Austin, who had emigrated to Portage Township from Genesee County, New York in 1833. A settlement grew on the north shore of the lake, known as Austin or Austin Lake. A post office named "Austin's Lake" was established on May 18, 1850, with Austin as postmaster, and operated until August 15, 1853. The place was also a station on the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad in 1867. West Lake is adjacent to Austin Lake with Portage Road running between the two lakes. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.17 square miles (91.09 km²), of which 32.23 sq miles (83.48 km²) is land and 2.94sq miles (7.61 km²") is water. The city is located on the shores of Austin Lake, which is a small lake that was once known as "Austin Lake" Austin Lake is located at the junction of Portage Lake and West Lake, and has a population of 1,788. The town of Austin is located in Portage County, Michigan. It is on the U.S. Turnpike, which runs through the city. It was once called "Portage Township" and was the site of the Portage and Grand Rapids Railroad, which was built in the 1850s and 1860s. In 1867, Austin was the location of the first post office on the turnpike.

The racial makeup of the city was 90.75% White, 3.73% African American, 0.30% Native American, 2.64% Asian, 1.02% Pacific Islander, and 1.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.1%. The median age was 38.1 years, with 24.8% of residents under the age of 18; 7.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.7% were from 25 to 44; and 13.6% were 65 or older. The gender makeup ofThe city was 47. 9% male and 52.1% female. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.01. The age distribution was 26.4% under the Age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.9%. The median income for theCity was $25,414. About 4.8%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.9. of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over. For every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 88.8 males. There were 18,880 housing units at an average of 586.3 per square mile (226.4/km²).

Education

Most of Portage is in the Portage Public Schools school district. Some is in Comstock Public Schools, some is in Vicksburg Community Schools, and some is with Schoolcraft Community Schools. The town is located on the banks of the Little Red River. It is located near the junction of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. It was founded in 1858 and was named after the town's founder, William Portage. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with most living in Portage and its surrounding areas. The city is located in the Mississippi River valley, which runs through the town. The river was once known as the Red River, but was renamed after the city's namesake, William Portage in 1858. It's now called the Little Red River, which was named for the town’s founder, James Portage, who was born in the area in 1838. The Red River flows through the center of the town, and into the town of Vicksburg, where it is known as Vicks burg. It also runs through Portage's outskirts, where the town is known for its history and culture. The area is also known for being a popular tourist destination, especially in the early 1900s when it was known as Portage and the Town of Port of-the Pleasant Towns. In the late 1800s, the town was known for its discovery and development of the Little Red River River.
