Madison Heights is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, its population was 29,694. It is a northern suburb of Metro Detroit, about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of the Detroit city limits. The city lies in the Interstate 696 (I-696) and I-75 corridor and is served by two primary school districts, Lamphere and Madison. The mayor of Madison Heights is Roslyn Grafstein, who was appointed as Mayor in August 2020 to fill a vacant seat. Madison Heights shares borders with Troy to the north, Royal Oak to the west, Hazel Park to the south, and Warren to the east. There are more than 112 miles (180 km) of road within Madison Heights, of which the city maintains 105 miles (169 km), 95 miles (153 km) for snow removal, sweeping, and patching. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.09 square miles (18.36 km²) The city's racial makeup was 89.9% White, 6.4% African American, 0.5% Native American, 5.8% Asian,0.1% Pacific Islander, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5%. The city has 15 voting precincts, totaling more than 21,000 registered voters, and the city's population is 49% male and 50% female.

History

Madison Heights is the primary city name, but also Madison Hts are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Madison Heights. Madison Heights was originally part of Royal Oak Township. The 7.2 square miles (18.6 km²) city was one of the largest suburban communities in the Metro Detroit area. The city lies in the Interstate 696 (I-696) and I-75 corridor and is served by two primary school districts, Lamphere and Madison, as well as a full-service municipal government. The mayor of Madison Heights is Roslyn Grafstein, who was appointed as Mayor in August 2020 to fill a vacant seat. She is the first woman to be elected mayor of a major U.S. city in the history of the United States, and the first African-American woman to serve as mayor of any U.N. member state. She was elected to her first term on December 6, 2012. She took office on January 17, 2013. She will serve a two-year term, ending on August 31, 2018. She has been mayor of the city since December 6th, 2013, and was elected for a second term in November 2014. She became the first black woman mayor in the city's history in November 2013. The first city hall was at 26305 John R Road, the former township offices. On April 5, 1963, a new municipal building was dedicated which is on the present location at 300 West Thirteen Mile Road. The current city hall is located on the site of the old city hall. It was dedicated in April 1963. It is located in the heart of the Madison Heights neighborhood, on the west side of the town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.09 square miles (18.36 km²) Madison Heights shares borders with Troy to the north, Royal Oak to the west, Hazel Park to the south, and Warren to the east. The eastern border of Madison Heights (Dequindre Road) is also the border between Oakland and Macomb counties. There are more than 112 miles (180 km) of road within Madison Heights, of which the city maintains 105 miles (169 km) for snow removal, sweeping, and patching. The city has 15 voting precincts, totaling more than 21,000 registered voters. Robert Earl Richardson was the first Chief of Police when the city was chartered in December 1955. Madison Heights is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and has a population of more than 20,000. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the city's population will rise to more than 25,000 by the end of the year. It is located on the banks of the Detroit River, which runs through the center of the city. It also shares a border with the city of Troy, which is located to the northeast. The town of Warren, Michigan, is in the state's East Coast region, and is the largest city in the Oakland County area, with more than 10,000 residents. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the early 1900s. The Battle of Gettysburg was the deadliest battle of the Civil War, killing more than 3,000 people.

As of the census of 2010, there were 29,694 people, 12,712 households, and 7,543 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 83.9% White, 6.4% African American, 0.5% Native American, 5.8% Asian, and 0.1% Pacific Islander. About 0.2% of all people in Madison Heights were of Vietnamese descent in 2008, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. There are several Vietnamese businesses, including restaurants, shops, and one of the largest Asian supermarket in southeast Michigan. Madison Heights has a sizeable Asian community, with businesses oriented to pan-Asian clientele. The city's median household income was $42,326, and the median family Income was $51,364. About 7.0% of families and 8.9%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.8%. of those under age 18 and 13.0%. of people age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 3.02. There were 13,623 housing units at an average density of 1,901.6 per square mile (734.6/km²). There are more than 1,300 commercial and industrial businesses and services within the city's 7.2 square miles (18.6 km²) The city has 23 shopping centers, 11 hotels, more than 860,000 square feet (80,000 m2) of office space, and seven industrial parks. The Hungry Howie's Pizza corporate headquarters is in Madison Heights. The Telway Hamburger System is a long-standing 24-hour restaurant inMadison Heights known for its sliders (small hamburgers) and its unique late-night crowds. Madison Heights is also home to Moosejaw, a dog-sledding company. The city is home to Best Buy, Coca-Cola, Commercial Steel Treating Corporation, Costco, CVS Pharmacy, Home Depot, Meijer, Micro Center, Ogura Corporation, Sam's Club, Target, UPS, WOW!, Culver's, and Sears. It is also the home of the U.S. Air Force Air Force Base, which is located in the Madison Heights area of the state of Michigan. It also has a number of military bases, including the Air Force National Guard Air Base, the Air National Guard Base, and the Army Corps of Engineers. It has a population of more than 3,000 people, the majority of whom live in or near the city of Madison Heights and its surrounding areas. The population of the city is about 2,500 people.

Education

Madison District Public Schools and Lamphere Public Schools have public schools serving Madison Heights. The Japhet School was in Madison Heights until 2013, when it moved to Clawson. Four Corners Montessori Academy is a public charter school. St. Vincent Ferrer School of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit was inMadison Heights. Bishop Foley Catholic High School, a private school, is also in the area. The city is home to the Madison Heights YMCA, a youth center, and the Madison Yacht Club, a community center. It is also home to a number of private schools, including a private day school and a daycare center. The town is also the home of the Detroit Lions, a minor league baseball team, and a high school. It has a population of about 2,000 people, the largest of any city in the U.S. with more than 1,000 students. It also has a large Jewish community, with about 1,200 people living in the community.
