The Town of Babylon is one of ten towns in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Its population was 218,223 as of the 2020 census. At its westernmost point, it is about 20 miles (32 km) from New York City at the Queens border. The town was featured in the American version of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. It was officially formed in 1872 by a partition of the Town of Huntington. It borders Nassau County to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Parts of Jones Beach Island, Captree Island and Fire Island are in the southernmost part of the town. Long Island Macarthur Airport is an airport in Ronkonkoma, with daily commercial flights. The Babylon Beacon is a radio station licensed to Babylon with studios at 555 Sunrise Highway. It is located in the hamlet of Amityville in the town's southwestern part. It also houses the American Airpower Museum Museum from 1936 to 1980, and the Babylon Beacon's radio station, Babylon 102.3FM, is licensed to the town for many years. There are no airports in Babylon, but the town does have a private airport in East Farmingdale, which was built by Fairchild Aircraft in 1927, and acquired by Republic Aviation in 1939. There is a state park on Fire Island, a park on Gilgo Island, and an undeveloped preserve on a barrier island on the southern side of theTown of Babylon. It has a total area of 114.2 square miles (295.7 km²), of which 52.3 sq miles (135.4 km²) is land and 61.9 square miles of water.

History

Babylon is the primary city name, but also Captree Is, Captree Island, Gilgo Beach, Oak Beach, Oak Island, W Gilgo Beach, West Gilgo Beach are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Town of Babylon. Town was formed in 1872 by a partition of the Town of Huntington. Nathaniel Conklin moved his family to the area, and around 1803 named it New Babylon, after the ancient city of Babylon. The town was featured in the American version of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, in which Ramsay spent a week at Peter's, an Italian eatery that's now out of business. The Town of Babylon is located in the New York City borough of Queens. It is located on the East Coast of New York State, between Long Island and New Jersey. It was once known as Huntington South, and was once part of the town of Huntington, New York. It has a population of around 6,000. The population of Babylon was 7,000 in the 2010 Census. It also has a number of state parks, including Belmont Lake State Park, a state park on Fire Island, which is partly in the town, and Oak Beach State Park on the Great South Bay. The village of Amityville is in the southeastern part of Babylon, in the hamlet of Lindenhurst, and in Copiague Harbor, in Amity Harbor. There are also several beaches and islands in the region, including Cedar Beach, Gilgo Beach, and Grass Island. There is also an undeveloped preserve on a barrier island on the southern side of theTown of Babylon called Gilgo State Park. In the northeastern part of town, there is a park on the island of Belmont Lake.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 114.2 square miles (295.7 km²) The western town line is the border of Nassau County, and the southern town boundary is the Atlantic Ocean. The total area is 54.20% water, of which 52.3 square miles is land and 61.9 sq miles is water. The town is located in the eastern part of Long Island, on the eastern shore of the East Coast. The western border of the town is the Nassau River, which runs through the town. The southern border is theAtlantic Ocean, which is the town's southern border. The northern border is a stretch of the Long Island River, where the town meets the Atlantic. The eastern town line, the border with New York State, is the New York-New York State border, which also runs through Long Island. The north town line and the northern town line are the border and New York state's Nassau and Suffolk Counties, respectively, which run through the western part of the Town of Litchfield County, New York. The south townline is the northern border with Suffolk County, the eastern border of which is New York City. The west town line also is the southern border with Long Island City, New Hampshire, the northernmost point of the New England mainland. The east town line connects the town with the town of Montauk, New Jersey, where it is located on the east coast.

Government

Babylon is governed by supervisor Rich Schaffer and four town council members. The town has a population of about 1,000 people. It is located in the central part of the state. The population of the town is about 2,000. It was founded in the early 1900s and is located on the banks of the Euphrates River, which flows through the town. It also has a small lake, which is used as a source of water for the town's water supply. It has been in existence since the early 1800s and was once called the Babylon River. It is also the home of the Long Island Museum of Art, which is located in North Amityville, and the New York Museum of Nature and Science, located in East Farmingdale, which dates back to the early 19th century. The New York City Marathon is held in Babylon every year on the third Saturday of the month. It also takes place on the fourth Saturday of each month in the month of November. The Long Island City Marathon takes place in the first week of November each year. It takes place from 8 to 11 a.m. on the last Saturday of November in the Town of Long Island. The marathon is one of the largest in the United States, with more than 1,000 miles of track. It was founded in 1864. The city has a long history of being a popular destination for New Yorkers. It has been the site of the World Series of Baseball.

As of the census of 2000, there were 211,792 people, 69,048 households, and 52,407 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 76.34% White, 15.65% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.89% Asian, 3.36% from other races, and 2.47% from two or more races. 10.05% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 12. 4% who were 65 years of age or older.
