Coraopolis is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,559 at the 2020 census. In 1940 the population peaked at 11,086. It is a small community located to the west of Pittsburgh, along the Ohio River and to the east of the Pittsburgh International Airport. The borough is noted for its steep topography, numerous brick streets and many large, old houses. Dick's Sporting Goods is headquartered in Coraopolis, as is the American Bridge Company. It was previously known as a village under the name of Middletown, while the post office name was Vancefort. Legend has it that the borough was named for a member of the Watson family, Cora Watson, who was born on February 2, 1870. However, an old newspaper suggests it more likely took the appellation from a Greek word for "maiden city" The first municipal building was built in 1897 on State Avenue. In 1892, the community took off with the construction of the first high-speed electric street railway in the United States, going to Neville Island and over to McKees Rocks. Along with the railway came Consolidated Glass Company, which employed up to 350 people, and Glass Consolidated and Fostoria, which was located in Cor aopolis from 1895 until 1963. Other new industries established on Neville Island include the Ohio State University and the University of Pittsburgh. The first public library was built on Fourth Ave in 1917. The city's first post office was established in August 1861, and changed to CorAopolis in March 1886.
History
Coraopolis is the primary city name, but also Moon Township, Moon Twp are acceptable city names or spellings, Carpolis, Coropolis on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Borough of Coraopolis. Coraopolis and Neville Island was established in 1886. It was previously known as a village under the name of Middletown, while the post office name was Vancefort. Coraopolis was named for a member of the Watson family, Cora Watson, who was born on February 2, 1870. The area is the birthplace of Michael Keaton, the actor who starred in the film "Cora" Cora and Neville Township merged to form the Cornell School District in 1971, which became widely adopted in 1976. The borough is now home to the University of Pennsylvania's Keaton School of Music, which was founded in 1876. The town's first post office was established on Fifth Ave. in 1877, and the first municipal building was built on State Avenue in 1897. The current municipal complex was constructed in 1929, and was used until 1929, when a new building was constructed on Fifth Avenue. It is located on the banks of the Allegheny River, near the former site of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The city's name is derived from the Greek word Kore meaning'maiden' and opolis meaning 'city' ('maidenCity') It is also known as Koreopolis after the first burgess (mayor) at the time, Josiah Dillon, who knew Greek and was also the first mayor.
Present day
Coraopolis is experiencing a period of revitalization highlighted by new storefront businesses and façade improvements. In 2017, two new brewpubs, a craft distillery, a coffee shop, a restaurant, and several other small businesses opened their doors. Coraopolis also shares a new athletic complex with neighboring Robinson and Moon Townships that will feature soccer, rugby, and lacrosse fields, when completed. The 1896 Richardsonian Romanesque train station is also being restored, and will become a community center and event space once completed.

Coraopolis is a Pennsylvania borough with an elected borough council, elected mayor, and a professional borough manager. It is located within Pennsylvania's Representative District 45, Pennsylvania Senate District 42, and U.S. Congressional District 17. The borough has a population of 2,000. The mayor of Coraopolis is the borough's first African-American mayor. The council has an elected mayor with a four-year term of office. It has a professional Borough Manager with a five-year terms of office, and an elected Borough Council member with a six-year contract. It was founded in 1881 and is part of Pennsylvania's Roman Catholic Diocese of Corahopolis. The town is located in Pennsylvania's Luzerne County, which is in the eastern part of the state and is home to the Pennsylvania State College of Arts and Sciences. The city's population is 2,200. It also has a mayor and a borough council with a three-yearterm of office and a five year contract. The Borough Manager is a professional borough manager with a seven-year contract, and the borough council has a seven year contract, as well as a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Human Services. In addition to the mayor and council, the borough manager has a full-time staff of four people, including two full time police officers and two part-time police officers, to manage the borough. The police chief has a contract to work for the borough, as does the Borough Manager.
Geography
Coraopolis is located at 40°3057N 80°946W (40.515818, -80.162791).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²) Of this, 1.3 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles, or 9.46%, is water. The borough is part of the New Jersey Bay Area, which is also known as the Bay Area of New York and New Jersey. It is the only borough in New Jersey that is not part of New Jersey or New York City. It has a population of 1,788. The city's population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. The town's population has declined from 1,938 in the early 1900s to 1,632 in the mid-20th century, according to the United States Census Bureau. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1800s. The Battle was the first battle of the American Civil War, which ended in a stalemate between the American Revolutionary War and the First World War. The battle was won by the American Army, which was led by Gen. George Washington, who was killed by the German Army during World War I. In the early 20th Century, the town was known as Coraopolis, and the name is still used to refer to the town.

Coraopolis is located along the southern bank of the Ohio River. It has two land borders, including Moon Township to the south and west. It is connected to Neville Island (Neville Township) via the Coraopolis Bridge to the northeast and is adjacent to the boroughs of Haysville, Glen Osborne, and Sewickley across the Ohio river's confluence at the northeast end of Neville Island. The city has a population of about 2,000. It was once known as the "City of the Stars" due to its large number of skyscrapers and mansions. The town is now known as "Theopolis" because of its resemblance to the name of a city in the book "The Godfathers of Islam" The city is home to a number of non-profit organizations, including the Cripple Creek Foundation and the Ohio Valley Foundation. It also has a chapter of the National League of Cities, the Ohio chapter of which is based in the city. The Ohio River runs through the center of the city, and the city is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has a base of operations in Ohio. The U.N. Census estimates the city's population to be around 2,200. The population of the county is about 3,000, with the majority of that population living in the town of Coraopolus. The county's largest employer is the Ohio City School District, which employs about 1,200 people.

The Battle of the Bulge took place between 1864 and 1875.
