Shelton was settled by the English as part of the town of Stratford, Connecticut, in 1639. Shelton was split off from Stratford in 1789, as Huntington (named for Samuel Huntington). The current name originated in a manufacturing village started in the 1860s named for the Shelton Company. The explosion that destroyed the Sponge Rubber Plant on Canal Street in 1975 marked the start of the decline of Shelton's industries. Over 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m2) of corporate office space spread across 12 buildings was constructed by the R.D. Scinto corporation alone. In November 2007, a tree growing on Soundview Avenue was selected to be the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. In July 2009, a EF1 tornado touched down with wind speeds between 95 and 105 miles per hour. According to WTNH, the most damage was concentrated along the Orono Trail, where many of the trees were shot in the movie All Good Things. In March 2008, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell announced that after negotiations with State Senator Dan Debicella and Representative Jason Perillo, state bond funds in the amount of $2 million would be directed toward additional improvements to the city's infrastructure. The city's population was 40,869 at the 2020 United States Census, and is expected to rise to 40,000 by the end of the decade. It is located in Fairfield County, Connecticut and is located on the banks of the Housatonic River.

History

In November 2013, a tree picked to be the second Christmas tree to be picked up by the Rockefeller Center was dropped into the Housatonic River and dumped into the water. In July 2009, a line of heavy thunderstorms with a weak tornado spawned an EF1 tornado with wind speeds between 95 and 105 miles per hour. According to WTNH, the most damage was concentrated along the Orono Trail, where many of the most concentrated trees were blown down. On November 30, 2008, producers and movie staff for the upcoming All Good Things shot one scene on Canal St in downtown Shelton. The scene involved dragging a body and dumping it into the body of the body into the river, where it was later found to be a tree. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, efforts were underway to restore nineteenth-century industrial buildings in the downtown area.

The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over,there were 90.3 males. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.11. the city's median income was $67,292, and the median income for a family was $75,523 (these figures had risen to $80,694 and $94,485 respectively as of a 2007 estimate). About 2.5%. of families and 3.2% of people were below the poverty line, including 3. 2% of those under 18 and 5.5. of those age 65 or over.

Government and politics

Shelton is one of the few municipalities in Connecticut with its own sheriff's department, the Shelton Sheriff's Department. Shelton is a Republican stronghold in presidential elections, as the city has voted for the GOP presidential nominee in every election since 1964. The current Board of Aldermen consists entirely of eight Republicans. Representation of Shelton in the U.S. House of Representatives is split between the 3rd and 4th congressional districts, which are represented by Democratic Representatives Rosa DeLauro and Jim Himes. As of 2022 the head of the department is Sheriff Carl Sylvester. The department is not a law enforcement agency. Members are political appointees and receive no salary and derive income from fees charged to serve legal papers. The town is a member of the Connecticut League of Municipalities, which is a non-profit organization based in Stamford. It was founded in the early 1900s and is based in the town's central business district. The city has a population of about 3,000. The mayor is Republican Mark Lauretti, who was re-elected for a fourteenth term on November 7, 2017. The Republican Party has controlled the city government since the 1980s. At the state level, the city is represented by Republican State Senator Kevin Kelly of Stratford and Republican State Representative Jason Perillo of the 113th District. The state legislature has two State Assembly districts that cover Shelton. The City of Shelton's goal is to preserve at least 15% of the land as permanently protected, locally controlled open space. There are over 15 miles (24 km) of hiking trails in Shelton, including a portion of the Paugussett "Blue Blazed" trail. There is opportunity for fishing, boating, geocaching and letterboxing, hiking, walking and biking. Dogs are welcomed when on leash. There's no hunting on city-owned open space, by ordinance. The city owns close to 2,000 acres (8.1 km²) of Public Open Space, Protected Farmland is 411 acres (1.66 km²), and the Shelton Land Trust organization has preserved 364 acres (1.47 km²). As of 2009, these forms of open space amount to 13% of. the City and more than 2,700 acres (11 km².) The City of. Shelton owns almost 1,500 acres of land that is protected by the purchase of development rights, and properties held by the non-profit Shelton. Land Conservation Trust has preserved more than 1,200 acres (4.4 km1) of land. The City. owns nearly 1,600 acres (5.3 km²); the Trust has conserved more than 500 acres (2.2 km1). The city. owns about 1,800 acres (3.7 km²; the Trust owns more than 400 acres) of farmland. The. city owns about 2,300 acres (7.5 km²): the majority of which is privately owned.

Education

Shelton Public Schools include Shelton High School for grades 9 through 12. Five primary schools for pre-kindergarten through fourth grade, including Elizabeth Shelton Elementary, Mohegan Elementary, Long Hill Elementary School, Booth Hill Elementary and Sunnyside Elementary School. Shelton Intermediate School is for grades 7 and 8. Perry Hill School is a middle school for grades 5 and 6, and a high school for 9-12-year-olds. The Shelton Public School District is part of the New Jersey Department of Education. The school district has been in existence since the early 1900s. It is one of the oldest public schools in the state. It was founded by the city of Shelton in the early 20th century. The district was named after Shelton, New Jersey, where the town's first post-secondary school was founded in 1847. It has been the site of the Shelton School District since the mid-19th century, when the town was founded. The current school district was formed in the late 1950s. It is located on Perry Hill Road and has 10 greens, with the tee shot going over Perry Hill road. It was founded by an unknown original designer in the early 1900s. The clubhouse's 1920s era structure still remains as the core to the current structure. It has a nine-hole golf course with 10 greens to allow alternating #2 and #11 where the tee hit goes over Perryhill Road. It also has a 18- hole golf course which is located at the Huntington part of the city. The tournament is held each year at the Brownson Golf Club in Huntington. The winner of the trophy is the winner of each year's Shelton Golf Club competition, alternating between Brownson and Highland each year for the past five years. The trophy is awarded for the best overall score.

Notable companies

Bic Corporation conducts U.S. operations from Shelton. PerkinElmer, formerly Perkin-Elmer Instruments, is best known for building the optical components of the Hubble Space Telescope. Pitney Bowes employs 1,460 in the city. Prudential Annuities headquarters are in Shelton, as is the offices of Cartier SA and Hubbell Incorporated. The city is also home to the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers franchise, the San Francisco Giants, and the San Diego 49ers football team, the D.C. 49ers and the Los Angeles 49ers, among many other sports teams. The town is home to Shelton High School, which was founded in 1883. It is also the home of the University of California, San Diego, where the football team is based. It was also the site of the opening of the San Jose State University football stadium in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
