New Milford is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. It is the largest town in the state of Connecticut in terms of land area at nearly 63.7 mi² (164.9822 km²) The town center is listed as a census-designated place (CDP) The northern portion of the town is part of the region of northwestern Connecticut, and the far eastern portions are part of The Litchfields region. The area constituting contemporary New Milford was originally inhabited by the indigenous Wawyachtonoc people, while the town of New milford itself was formally established by English colonists in the early 18th century. During the early- to mid-19th century, NewMilford was home to several locations that were part of. the Underground Railroad network. The town is located roughly 50 miles (80 km) west of Hartford; 65 miles (105 km) southwest of Springfield, Massachusetts; 85 miles (137 km) southeast of Albany, New York; and 63 miles (101 km) northeast of New York City. The 7th Connecticut Regiment (also known as the 19th Continental Regiment) was raised in town on September 16, 1776. The regiment would see action in the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown and theBattle of Monmouth. In total, the town "sent 285 men to fight in the War out of a total population of 2,776." The Boardman family was a prominent family in the town.

History

In 1707, John Noble Sr., previously of Westfield, Massachusetts, and his eight-year-old daughter Sarah Noble were the first Anglo-American settlers. The indigenous Wawyachtonoc lived in the area of modern New Milford both before and during the colonial era. In 1711, twelve families petitioned the Connecticut General Assembly to create the town, together with the associated privilege of levying a tax to support a minister. During the American Revolution, the 7th Connecticut Regiment (also known as the 19th Continental Regiment) was raised in town on September 16, 1776. In 1942 Buck's Rock Camp was founded off Bucks Rock Road, and has remained in operation ever since. The town has added a skate park at Young's Field (2006), reconstructed the basketball courts at Williamson Field (2010), and improved Lynn Park and Deming Deming Park (2017), which will eventually join the existing 1.5-mile Young River Trail. It is also home to a 1,000,000-gallon sewer plant expansion on West Boardman Street, a pump pump station on the Rte. 67/Grove Street/Intersection, and an ambulance facility on the Scovill Street/Scovill Field Intersection. It has a 1-mile trail linking Young Field's Field to the Young River's Field, and 0.25-mile link to the neighboring towns of Kentfield and Gaylordsville in the neighboring Brookfield section of Connecticut.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 63.7 square miles (165.1 km²), making it the largest town in Connecticut. The Aspetuck River, Still River and Housatonic River flow through the town. New Milford has a humid continental climate, with mild to warm humid summers and cold to very cold winters. Snowfall is generally frequent in winter while average precipitation is most common in September. The highest recorded temperature was 103 °F (39 °C) in July 1966, while the lowest recorded temperature in January 1968 was 18 °F (28 °C) The town is located on the northeastern shore of Candlewood Lake. The CDP corresponding to the town center has atotal area of 3.4 square miles (8.8 km²) of it is land, and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km²) of it is water. The town of Greenwich is the second largest in Connecticut, with 47.62 square miles. 61.6 square miles  (159.5 km²) of New Milford is land and 2.2 square-miles  (5.6 km²  of Greenwich is land. The city of Greenwich has an area of 47.62 square kilometers (21.2 square miles) of land and 3.8 square miles of water. It is the largest city in the state, followed by New Haven.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 28,142 people, 10,618 households, and 7,503 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 91.71% White, 1.72% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 2.77% Asian,0.04% Pacific Islander, and 1.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 6.02% of the population. As of the 2000 Census the median income for a household in theTown was $65,354, and the median incomes for a family was $75,775. The per capita income for the Town was $29,630. About 2.1% of families and 3.3% of residents were below the poverty line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 5.5% ofThose age 65 or over. The town has a population of 24.30% under the age of 18, and 24.90% from 18 to 24, 24. 90% from 25 to 44, 31.75% from 45 to 64, and 12.18% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.13. The median age was 41.4 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every100 females age 18 or over, there are 93.6 males.

Sports

New Milford is home to the GMS Rowing Center. Founded in 2003, it manages a US Rowing Training Center Program. It has a highly successful Middle and High School (Junior) Program which competes at Youth National Championships, Junior National Team Trials, The "Royal Canadian Henley" and has sent rowers to the Junior World Rowing Championships. In 2011 GMS also had rowers representing the US at the Under 23 World Championships in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and at the World ROW Championships at Bled, Slovenia. The center is located in the New Milford area of New Jersey. It was founded in 2003 and is based in the town of New Milford. It is located on the New Jersey Turnpike at the intersection of Rte 1 and Rte 2. It also has a training facility in the nearby town of Milford, New Jersey, which is located at the junction of RTE 2 and RTE 3. The training center has a program for middle and high school rowers. It competes in the Junior National Championships and the Junior national team trials. The program also has rowers who have represented the United States at the U.S. Under 23 Rowing World Championships and The World Under 23 Championships. The Center has also sent rower to The RoyalCanadian Henley and the World U23 Rowing Championship in Bled. The Rowing center is also home to a high school program for high school students. The school has a rowing program for the middle and senior grades.

Education

New Milford is home to the Canterbury School, a well-known Roman Catholic boarding school. The house that inspired the 1946 novel and 1948 film, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, still stands in the Merryall section of town. The school's Chapel of Our Lady features the Jose M. Ferrer Memorial Carillon. New Milford has one high school, one middle school, and one elementary school. It also has a high school and a private school for boys and girls, as well as a middle school and high school for girls. The town is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which runs from New Jersey to Rhode Island. It is also the site of the New England Shakespeare Festival, which takes place in July and August each year. The city is also home to a number of museums, including the National Museum of American History and the New Hampshire Museum of Art, which dates back to the 17th century. It was the birthplace of the American Revolution, which took place in 1777. The New England Museum of History and Art is located in the center of the town, near the town's main square. The museum is open to the public and has a collection of historic buildings, including several that date back to 18th century New England. It has also been the home of the U.S. Supreme Court, which was founded in 1788, and the Supreme Court of the United States, which sits on the base of the Eiffel Tower, which opened in 1791.

Infrastructure

New Milford is served by fixed-bus routes of the Housatonic Area Regional Transit. The main highways of the town are U.S. Route 7 and U.S. Route 202. Candlelight Farms Airport is located 3 miles southwest of downtown, featuring a single grass runway and helipad. There has been continued talk about a proposal to electrify and restore the Danbury Branch of the Metro-North Railroad north of Danbury to New Milford. These efforts have included a Rail Study in 2008, proposed state legislation in 2017, and stimulus money in 2021. The long-awaited completion of Super 7 happened in November 2009. The realignment of Grove Street and Prospect Hill Road (Rte. 67) was completed in the fall of 2010. The Department of Public Works (DPW) awarded Stimulus ARRA Project 95-249 Grove Street (south of Anderson Ave) and Boardman Road (west of O+G Quarry) in 2010. This was complete in the summer of 2011. The town is located on the Connecticut Turnpike, which runs from New York City to Long Island, New York. It is also on the New York-Massachusetts Turnpikes, which run from Long Island to Boston. It also has a New Haven Turnpiked, which goes from New Haven to Hartford. It was completed on the turnpike in the spring of 2012. The New Haven turnpikes go from New Hampshire to Rhode Island.

The movie was directed by Robert Redford, who also directed "The Godfather" (1978) and "Dirty Dancing" (1979) The film is based on a novel written by Redford and co-written by David Walliams. It was published in the United States by Paramount Pictures, which also filmed the film in the city. The book was published by Simon & Schuster, a division of Random House, on September 26, 2009, and is available on Blu-ray and DVD. The price of the Blu-Ray is $19.99. The DVD is $24.99, and the DVD is also available for $29.99 and $39.99 for both Blu-rays and DVDs.
