Hanahan is a city in Berkeley County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 12,937 at the 2000 census. The 2010 census puts the population at 17,997. Portions of the Naval Weapons Station Charleston, including the Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston, are located in Hanahan. Hanahan is bordered on the west and south by the city of North Charleston. To the east is the old Naval Weapons station, which was formerly a submarine base, and is still federal property. The Otranto Plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The city has a total area of 11.5 square miles (29.8 km²), of which 10.7 sq miles (27.7 km²) is land and 0.81sq miles (2.1km²), or 7.14%, is water. The U.S. Office of Management and Budget defines Hanahan as part of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area. It is located at the very south end of Berkeley County and its city limits are contiguous with the county line between Berkeley and Charleston counties. There are two commercial districts, one in the southernmost section of the city and another in Tanner Plantation. There has been some commercial development in the area known as Tannerplantation, which has developed over about the last 15 years. It does have quite a number of major warehouses in the northeast and southeast portions, most of whose business is tied directly to the Port of Charleston.

Geography

Hanahan is the primary city name, but also Charleston, N Charleston, North Charleston are acceptable city names or spellings, Chas on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Hanahan, South Carolina. Hanahan is located at the very south end of Berkeley County, and its city limits on the west and south sides are contiguous with the county line between Berkeley and Charleston counties. It was incorporated as a city in 1973. The Otranto Plantation was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Among other uses of the former submarine base is the Naval Consolidated Brig, which is there, as is the Navy's Nuclear Power School. There has been some commercial development in the area known as Tanner Plantation, which has developed over about the last 15 years.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 20,325 people, 8,891 households, and 6,031 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 70.6% White, 17.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.0% Asian,0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. There were 5,698 housing units at an average density of 565.8 per square mile (218.5/km²) The city's median income was $39,327, and the median income for a family was $45,246. The per capita income for the city is $22,629. About 6.0%. of families and 17.4%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.9%. of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over. The city has a population of 19,597, with a population density of 1,284.7 people per squaremile (496.0/ km²). The city is located on the Ohio Turnpike, which runs through the town of Hanahan. Hanahan is home to the Ohio State University, which was founded in 1883. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is located in Hanahan, and has a campus that opened in 1894. The town's name is derived from the Hanahan River, which flows into the Ohio River.

Government and infrastructure

The form of government is council. The council is the governing body of the city, with the city administrator being hired by, and serving at the pleasure of, the city council. Portions of the Naval Weapons Station Charleston, including the Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston, are located in Hanahan. The Hanahan Police Department operates a 40-person Department complete with a dispatch center, animal control officers, community service officer, community youth officer and two School Resource Officers. The department operates on four, twelve hour shifts with a Sergeant and a Corporal overseeing the operations of each shift. The fire department operates two engine companies, one tower company, one medic unit, and one battalion officer vehicle manned by the shift officer. The mayor and council members, though paid a small salary, are not full-time, but are citizens with other jobs. The city is home to the U.S. Army's 3rd Battalion, 3rd Regiment, and 4th Battalion, 4th Regiment, which are based in the Tanner Plantation area of the town. The town is also the home of the South Carolina Air National Guard, which has a base in the town and a fleet of military vehicles. The state's largest employer is the University of South Carolina at Charleston, where the mayor is a first among equals on the council, presiding over council meetings and representing the city at official functions. Hanahan is the location of the National Guard's 1st Battalion, 2nd Battalion, and 3rd Brigade, which is based in Charleston. It is the only city in South Carolina with a national guard base.

Armed Forces

During the Cold War, the Naval Base (1902-1996) became the third largest U.S. homeport serving over 80 ships and submarines. In 2010, the Air Force Base (3,877 acres) and Naval Weapons Station (>17,000 acres) merged to form Joint Base Charleston. The Charleston, South Carolina metropolitan area is home to over 79,000 Airmen, Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, DOD civilians, dependents, and retirees. The area is also the site of the South Carolina Naval Shipyard, which repaired frigates, destroyers, cruisers, sub tenders, and submarines in the 1950s and 1960s. It was also the Atlantic Fleet's load out base for all nuclear ballistic missile submarines during the Second World War. In the 1990s, over 2,500 nuclear warheads and their UGM-27 Polaris, UGM.73 Poseidon, and U GM-96 Trident I delivery missiles (SLBM) were stored and maintained at the Weapons Station.

Education

Hanahan Elementary and Hanahan Middle School were both awarded National Blue Ribbon Award status by the U.S. Department of Education in 2014. Out of 5 schools in the entire state, Hanahan has two of them. Hanahan also continues to cultivate some of the best softball and baseball players in the state. Both the 9- and 11-year-old girls team won the Dixie Ponytails World Series Softball Championship in 2013. The public library, a branch of the Berkeley County Library System, is located in Hanahan.Hanahan has three public schools for school aged children. The town also has a public library and a public school for middle and high school students. The school district has three elementary schools and two middle schools for high school aged students. It has two high schools for middle school and one high school. It also has two elementary schools for elementary and middle school students for both grades 7 and 8. The city has a high school for both high school and junior high students for grades 9 and 10. The high school has a junior high for both boys and girls for grades 6 and 7. The community also has an elementary school for grades 8 and 9 for students 6 and 8 years of age. It is located on the main campus of Berkeley County College of Education, which is a part of the University of California, Berkeley. It was founded in 1881 and is the oldest public school in Berkeley County. It opened its doors in 1883. It currently has three high schools and one middle school.

Arts and culture

Fishing and water sports are a large part of life in Hanahan. Yeamans Hall Club is ranked the #2 private course in the State of South Carolina. The Hanahan Amphitheater is an outdoor community theater that hosts city run events, movies in the park and concerts. The Goose Creek Reservoir contains a wide range of fish species and hosts several tournaments per year. Hanahan has direct access to the Cooper River and the Charleston Harbor. It is located in the middle of the town and has several neighborhoods that have tidal water behind them. The town has a population of about 2,000 people and is located on the South Carolina Turnpike, which runs through the town. The city is home to the Hanahan High School, which was founded in 1891. It was the first high school in the state and was built in 1894. The high school has a football field and a track and field field, as well as a baseball field and basketball court. It also has a pool, which is used for swimming and other water sports. It has a tennis court, which has been used for tennis and other sports since the 1970s. The community has a number of restaurants and bars, many of which are open to the public. The village has a large number of businesses, including a local bank, a bowling alley, a pool and a bowling center. There is also a public library, which opened in the 1950s and is open through the end of the year.
