The city's name is said to derive from a small joke among divinity students at Western Reserve College, which in the early 19th century was in Hudson, Ohio. Macedonia is located at 41°194N 81°305W (41.317807, -81.501460).According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.75 square miles (25.25 km²), including 9.71 square miles of land and 0.04 sq miles (0.10 km²) of water. The students, who were called upon to preach in the small hamlet 6 miles (10 km) to the north, recalled Acts 16:10: "...we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them." The city is named for the town of Macedonia, which was in the Bible's Book of Acts. The city was named after the city of Macedonia in the Book of Isaiah, which is also known as the birthplace of Jesus Christ. The name of the city is derived from the word "Macedonia" which means "to go to" or "to visit" in Greek. The word "Hudson" means "hollow" in English, and the name of Hudson is "hudson-on-the-Ohio River," which is a river that runs through the city's center. The town is named after Hudson, a town in Ohio, which once was part of the Ohio River Valley and was known as Hudson, which ran through the town's center and into the hills. It is now a city of the same name, with a population of about 2,000 people.
