Wapello Township is a township in Louisa County, Iowa. Wapello was organized in 1841. It is located on the Iowa-Illinois border. It was named after the Wapellos, a family of the same name, who lived in the area. The township is home to the University of Iowa's football team, the Iowa Cornhuskers. It also has the Iowa State Fair, which is held every year in Wapella. The town is also known for its apple orchards, which date back to the 17th century. It has a population of 1,856. It's located in the eastern part of the county, just south of the town of Dubuque. The Wapelli River runs through the town, which was named for the town's first inhabitants, the Wapilos, who first settled in the region in the 1770s and 1780s. In 1841, the township was organized.
