Geneva is a city in and the county seat of Kane County, Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 21,393. The area experienced rapid population growth from the late 1980s through the mid-2000s as the Chicago suburbs spread to the west. Geneva is a popular tourist destination with its scenic location along the Fox River and numerous shops and restaurants. Geneva has an active historical society, the Geneva History Center, located in downtown Geneva as well as the Fabyan Windmill, an old Dutch windmill dating back to the 1850s. In 2013 it was nominated by Bloomberg Businessweek as the best place to raise a kid in Illinois. It is located at 41°53'9" North, 88°18'42" West (41.885722, 88.311771) and is 58 miles (58 km) west of downtown Chicago. According to the 2010 census, Geneva has a total area of 9.994 square miles (25.88 km²) (or 97.56%) is land and 0.244 sq miles (0.63 km²), (or 2.44%) is water. It was first settled in the 1830s on an important route from Chicago. Daniel Shaw Haight was the first European settler in Geneva. He sold his claim in 1835 to James and Charity Herrington, who were influential in the creation of the town of Geneva. A local's connections with Col. Richard Hamilton, a prominent Cook County politician, led to the naming Geneva as county seat in 1836.

Geography

Geneva is located at 41°53'9" North, 88°18'42" West (41.885722, 88.311771), 36 miles (58 km) west of downtown Chicago. According to the 2010 census, Geneva has a total area of 9.994 square miles (25.88 km²) of which 97.56% is land and 0.244 sq miles (0.63km²) (or 2.44%) is water. Geneva is located on the Illinois River, which flows through the city. The city is located in the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the Chicago-Napoleon Urban Statistical Area. It is the only city in the U.S. state of Illinois with a population of more than 100,000. Geneva's population is estimated to be around 1,000,000 as of the census of 2010. It has a population density of 1,100,000 people per square mile (450,000 per km²), which is about 2.4% higher than the national average. The town has a water supply of 1.4 square miles per square kilometer (1.4 sq mi) and has a surface of 9,994 square acres (25,881 km²). It is located near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and the Illinois Turnpike, which connects the city to Chicago via the Chicago River and the Chicago Skyway. It also has a lake, the Illinois Dells, which runs through Geneva.

History

Geneva was first settled in the 1830s on an important route from Chicago. The Fabyan Windmill is an authentic, working Dutch windmill dating from the 1850s. The Sacred Heart Seminary Shrine is a stone and mosaic religious Chapel located in Geneva. Elizabeth Place or the Henry Bond Fargo House is a historic residence in Mission Revival style in Geneva in the Gunnar Anderson Forest Preserve along the Fox River, near the old Sacred Heart Monastery. The altar is inscribed with the letters "IHS," referencing the first three letters of Jesus in the first book of the New Testament. The church has frequently been the victim of vandal, who have damaged the stone walls and mosaics on the stone structure, leaving pieces of stone on the ground on October 21, 2014. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 12, 2008, as part of the Geneva Historic Places. It is located in the Kane County Forestpreserve District, just north of Batavia, off Route 25. It sits next to the Government Center, which was built in the early 1900s in the Gothic Revival style. It has been listed on the U.S. Register of National Historic Places as the Geneva Grotto. It also sits on the onetime estate of Colonel George FabyAn, who was a prominent local businessman. It originally operated as a custom grinding mill, but is now part of a forest preserve. The windmill was selected to be on a postage stamp, aspart of a series of five windmills in a stamp booklet called "Windmills USA".

Sports

Geneva has been home to the Kane County Cougars since 1991. The Cougars currently play at Northwestern Medicine Field. In 2021 they will join the American Association of Professional Baseball. In 2015 the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League moved to Geneva from Bensenville, Illinois and play at Fox Valley Ice Arena. The Chicago Steel are a member of the U.S. Hockey League and play in the National Hockey League. They are currently in the American Hockey League, playing in the Hersheypark Stadium in Chicago. They were previously in the Midwest League and played in the Chicago White Sox organization. They moved to the Geneva area in 1991 when the Wausau Timbers relocated from Wausausau, Wisconsin. They currently play for the Geneva Cougars of the American Baseball League. In 2011 the Cougars won their first league championship in 20 years. They also won their second league title in 2012. They won their third title in 2013. They have won two league titles in a row in 2014 and 2015. They last won the league in 2012 and 2013. In 2014 they won their fourth title in the league, beating the St. Louis Cardinals in the final game of the season. They lost their fifth title in 2015 and lost their sixth in 2015. The team has won three league titles since moving to Geneva in 1991. They haven't won a league championship since 2002. The last time they won a championship was in 2003. They had won the title in 2004 and 2005. The club has won four league titles and lost the other two.

Transportation

Geneva is served by Chicago Midway International Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Dupage Airport. The city also benefits from highways running through the city, including State Routes 25, 31, 38 with easy access to Interstate 88. As a part of the Chicago metropolitan area, Geneva has a station on the Union Pacific/West line of the Metra commuter rail system. It provides frequent service to downtown Chicago, 36 miles (58 km) away, and extends west to Elburn. The following bus routes run through this city: Route 529 - Randall Rd / 5th Street, Route 801 - Elgin / Geneva, Route 802 - Aurora / St. Charles, and Route 803 - Aurora/Geneva / Elgin. It is also served by the Pace bus system run by Chicago's suburbs, which runs through Geneva and the surrounding suburbs. It also has the following train stations: Geneva, Elgin, Aurora, Elburn, and Elgin/Genevra, as well as the Elgin-Aurora-Genevran line, which provides service to the city from Elgin and Aurora. The Geneva-Elgin line provides service from the city to the town of Elgin in the suburbs, and to Elgin on the Illinois Turnpike. It runs through the village of Geneva, which is located in the western suburbs of the city. It has a train station at Geneva, Illinois, on the Chicago-Illinois-Wisconsin line. The station is on the U.S. Route 50.

Geneva School District 304 includes the following schools: elementary, middle and high schools. Geneva High School is the only high school in the district. The district also includes two middle schools and one high school. The school district is part of the Ohio Board of Education. It was founded in 1894 and has been in existence since 1894. It is the largest school district in the state, with more than 1,000 students. It also has the largest enrollment in Ohio, with nearly 1,200 students in grades 7-12. It has one of the largest enrollments in Ohio in terms of students aged 6-12, with about 1,800 students. The District has a population of about 2,000,000 people. The majority of its schools are located in the town of Geneva, Ohio. The city's population is about 3,000. Harry and Tonto (1974) starring Art Carney and directed by Paul Mazursky. Road to Perdition (2002) starring Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and Jude Law was filmed in downtown Geneva. Novocaine (2001) starring Steve Martin was filmed at the Geneva Motel on the East Side of Geneva. The Resurrection of Gavin Stone (2017) starring Brett Dalton was filmed on Dodson Place. The Geneva Courthouse is located on the edge of the city's downtown area. It is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Courthouse, the Hotel du Centre, and the Grand Hotel. The Courthouse was built in the 17th century, and was the site of the first European settlement in the 16th century. It was also home to the first American settlement in 17th Century, when the first Americans arrived in the 18th Century. The Grand Hotel was built on the site in the 19th century and is still used as a hotel today. The hotel was also used for the filming of several Hollywood films, including The Wizard of Oz and The Godfather, among others. The Hotel du Luxembourg is located in the heart of downtown Geneva and was used as the setting for the film "The Godfather" (1949) and "The Wizard of Waverly Place" (1960). The hotel is also the location of the famous "Geneva Hotel" which opened in the early 1900s and is now known as the "Geneve Hotel".
