Philomath is a city in Benton County, Oregon, United States. It was named for Philomath (Greek, "love of learning") College. The population was 4,584 at the 2010 census and was most recently estimated in 2019 to have a population of 5,666. The city was incorporated on October 20, 1882. The college closed in 1929 due to a dramatic decline in enrollment. It is 5 miles (8 km) west of Corvallis on U.S. Route 20. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.05 square miles (5.31 km²) The city experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F (22.0 °C) according to the Köppen Climate Classification system. It has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps. In 2000, there were 3,838 people, 1,346 households, and 1,017 families living in the city. In the city, the median age was 34.3 years, with 27.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27. 2% were from 25 to 44; 26.3% are from 45 to 64; and 9.4% are 65 years of age or older. The racial makeup of the city was 93.25% White, 0.16% African American, 1.64% Native American, 1.0% Asian, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7%.

History

Philomath was named after the Philomath College that was founded in 1867 by the United Brethren Church. The name of the college and city was derived from two Greek words meaning "lover of learning". The city was incorporated on October 20, 1882. The college closed in 1929 due to a dramatic decline in enrollment. The city is now the home of the University of Pennsylvania's football team, the Philadelphia Eagles. The team is coached by former U.S. Vice President Joe DiMaggio, who also served as mayor of the city from 1882 to 1929. The Eagles are coached by ex-NFL star Joe Wawrinka, who served as president of the university from 1929 to 1931. The football team was coached by Joe DiMillio from 1867 to 1929, and again from 1951-1955. Theagles are now coached by current U.N. Vice-President Joe DeMillio, whom he served from 1955-1957. The game is called "The Philadelphia Eagles vs. The Philadelphia Eagles" The game was first played on October 19, 1867. The first official football game was held on October 21, 1877. The score was 1-0 in favor of the Eagles. It was the first time the team had ever won a national championship. The next day, the game was won by the Eagles, 2-1 in the first game of the World Series. The match was played in front of a crowd of 6,000 people.

It is located in the eastern part of the Oregon Coast Ranges, and is located near the Oregon-California border. It has an elevation of 2,738 (1,838) meters (7,737) according to the U.N. World Meteorological Service. It also has an area of 0.19 km² (0.19 sq miles) with a total of 1.86 sq miles (4.82 km²), of which 0.49 km² is land and 0.86sq miles (3.82km²) is water. The area has an average monthly temperature of 71.5°F (22.0°C) and an average annual rainfall of 3.2 square miles (7.3 km).

The Philomaths are home to a number of non-profit organizations, such as the local chapter of the Sierra Club, which helps young people in need of financial support and advice on how to get off the street and into the community. The local chapter also provides free haircuts and massages for women and children. The community has a strong sense of community, with many businesses and residents looking to move to the town in the future. It is also the home of the Philomatics, a group of young women who are passionate about science and technology.

Education

Philomath is served by the Philomath School District, which includes the following schools: Philomaths Elementary, Middle, High, and Charter Schools. The district also includes the Kings Valley Charter School (Pre-K through 12th grade) and the Philipomath Academy. The school district is part of the San Francisco Bay Area School Board of Trustees, which was formed in 1966. The board was created in response to the city's rapid growth in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was originally called the San Francisco School District. In the 1970s, the district was renamed the Philomaths School District. It is now known as the Philmath School District, and has a number of charter schools for pre-K-12th grade through high school students. It also includes a charter school for the Pre-K to 12th grade age group, Kings Valley Charter School, and a middle school for high school and middle school students, as well as an elementary and high school for elementary and middle students. The city's nickname is "The City of the Stars" and the district's mascot is the "Hawk" The town is also known as "The Hawk" for its distinctive red-and-white colors. Clear Cut: The Story of Philomath, Oregon was shown in the Sundance Film Festival in 2006. The film documents the clash of cultures between the old-time timber industry and the professionals and techies of the information age.
